2019 Challenge

This year I have

challenged myself to

paint 1 painting

per week in the

style of one of the

historical Top 100

artists.  I am trying to

use the techniques, medium and colours that they used but the goal is to refrain from copying them.  The time restriction of 1 week puts limitations on the oil painting and those artists who produced very detailed works

1 week - 1 artist

Week 46 - Edgar Degas (1834 - 1917)

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”

“Painting is very easy when you don't know how, but very difficult when you do."

You must aim high, not at what you are going to do at some future date, but what you are going to make yourself do today.  Otherwise working is just a waste of time."

"Do it again, ten times, a hundred times. Nothing in art must seem to be an accident, not even movement."

Week 48 - Jean-Michel Basquiet (1960-1988)

"I want to make paintings that look like they were done by a child."

"I don't listen to what the art critics say.  I don't know anyone who needs a critic to tell them what art is."

"The black person is the protagonist in most of my paintings.  I realised that I didn't see many paintings with black people in them."

"I start a picture and I finish it."

Week 50 The End

The year is over and I all I have to do is look back and reflect on the journey.

Week 47 - Rene Magritte (1898 - 1968)

“Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see.”

"Art evokes the mystery without which the world would not exist."

"To be a surrealist means barring the minds from the remembrance of all it has seen, and being always on the lookout for what it has never seen."

Week 49 - Andy Warhol (1928-1987)

“Art is what you can get away with."

"Everyone will be famous for 15 minutes."

"Being good in business is the most fascinating form of art.  Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art."

"I just happen to like ordinary things.  When I paint them, I don't try to make them extraordinary.  I just try to make them ordinary-ordinary."

"I want to be plastic.”
