2019 Challenge

This year I have

challenged myself to

paint 1 painting

per week in the

style of one of the

historical Top 100

artists.  I am trying to

use the techniques, medium and colours that they used but the goal is to refrain from copying them.  The time restriction of 1 week puts limitations on the oil painting and those artists who produced very detailed works

1 week - 1 artist

Quiet Beauty

Acrylic on Canvas

Week 5 - Mark Rothko (1903-1970)

"The evolution of the work of a painter is a journey in time towards clarity...To achieve this clarity is, inevitable, to be understood."

"clarity - the elimination of all obstacles between the painter and the idea, and between the idea and the observer."

Week 7 - Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640)

"I'm just a simple man standing alone with my old brushes, asking God for inspiration."

"White is poison to a picture: use it only in highlights."

Week 9 - Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968)

"I have forced myself to contradict myself in order to avoid conforming to my own taste."

"Art is either plagiarism or revolution."

"What I have in mind is that art may be bad, good or indifferent, but, whatever adjective is used, we must call it art, and bad art is still art in the same way that a bad emotion is still an emotion."

Week 6 - Edvard Munch (1863-1944)

"Nature is not only all that is visible to the eye... it also includes the inner pictures of the soul."

"I have no fear of photography as long as it cannot be used in heaven and in hell."

Week 8 - Francisco de

Goya (1746-1828)

"Fantasy abandoned by reason produces impossible monsters."

"Always lines, never forms! But where do they find these lines in Nature? For my part I see only forms that are lit up and forms that are not. There is only light and shadow."
