Brick Series - these pieces were inspired by my research into the realities of individuals who are often overlooked or rendered 'invisible' by societal structures, in this case the modern day brick industry in India.
I sought to represent their resilience through material, process and narrative.
In these pieces I have worked primarily with gesso, terracotta, sand and charcoal - elements that might be used in the manufacture of bricks and which in themselves are both mutable, capable of erasure and layering.
Gesso, with its capacity to obscure and reveal, became a metaphor for institutional silencing and the eradication of marginalised voices. Charcoal, with its fragility and depth, allowed me to suggest both presence and absence within the same marks.
Using differing degrees of realism and abstraction, together with impasto application techniques I suggested a spatial ambifuity that mirrors the social invisibility of my muses.
I hope that you find that these pieces are both impactful and resonate with you on a personal level.
50% of the proceeds of this series of paintings will be donated to the International Justice Ministry. Please contact me directly for further information.
