2019 Challenge

This year I have

challenged myself to

paint 1 painting

per week in the

style of one of the

historical Top 100

artists.  I am trying to

use the techniques, medium and colours that they used but the goal is to refrain from copying them.  The time restriction of 1 week puts limitations on the oil painting and those artists who produced very detailed works

1 week - 1 artist

Quiet Beauty

Acrylic on Canvas

Week 10 - Johannes Vermeer (1632-1674)

"In the work of Vermeer the subject of the picture becomes - for the first time in the history of art - the object that is contemplated." Andre Malraux, 1951.

Week 11 - Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519)

"Painting is poetry that is seen rather than felt, and poetry is painting that is felt rather than seen."

"Where the spirit does not work with the hand, there is no art."

"There are three classes of people, those who see, those who see when they are shown, those who do not see.

Week 13 - Gustave Courbet (1819-1877)

"I have never seen an angel.  Show me an angel, and I'll paint one."

"Beauty lies in nature and reveals, once the artist has perceived it, its own expressive power."."

Prison art

Week 11 - Marc Chagall (1887 - 1985)

"If I create from the heart, nearly everything works; if from the head, almost nothing."

"In our life there is a single colour, as on an artist's palette, which provides the meaning of life and art.  It is the colour of love."

Week 12 - Albrecht Durer (1471-1528)

"What beauty is, I know not, though it adheres to many things."

"No single man can be taken as a model for a perfect figure, for no man lives on earth who is endowed with the whole of beauty."
